Six thousand athletes converging on Cobb Track & Angell Field this
weekend can mean only one thing - it's time for the Stanford
Invitational, a meet that marks the unofficial start of the outdoor
season in the Bay Area. The meet takes place today and Saturday, with events throughout the
day and evening. Today's events start at 8:45 a.m. with a women's 5,000
section and conclude at 8:07 p.m. with the men's 10,000. Saturday's schedule runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Bring a seat cushion
to Cobb Track with its aluminum bleacher sets. Approximately 2,000
college and post-college athletes and 4,000 high schoolers are expected. In addition to athletes from Cal and Stanford, college teams from
Arkansas, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Florida State, Tennessee and BYU are
expected, along with a smattering of post-collegiate athletes looking
to break a sweat for the first time this outdoor season. Stanford's Erica McLain, who recently won the
triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships in a personal best 46
feet, 7 1/4 inches, will not go in her specialty; instead, she's
