On your marks: Outdoor season gets under way

(04-03) 20:11 PDT -- Six thousand athletes converging on Cobb Track & Angell Field this weekend can mean only one thing - it's time for the Stanford Invitational, a meet that marks the unofficial start of the outdoor season in the Bay Area.

The meet takes place today and Saturday, with events throughout the day and evening. Today's events start at 8:45 a.m. with a women's 5,000 section and conclude at 8:07 p.m. with the men's 10,000.

Saturday's schedule runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Bring a seat cushion to Cobb Track with its aluminum bleacher sets. Approximately 2,000 college and post-college athletes and 4,000 high schoolers are expected.

In addition to athletes from Cal and Stanford, college teams from Arkansas, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Florida State, Tennessee and BYU are expected, along with a smattering of post-collegiate athletes looking to break a sweat for the first time this outdoor season.

Stanford's Erica McLain, who recently won the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships in a personal best 46 feet, 7 1/4 inches, will not go in her specialty; instead, she's entered in the 100, ostensibly to work on her speed.
