Amanda Vestri, a Syracuse senior and an NCAA Division 1 Indoor All-American who elevated to No. 16 in collegiate history in the women's 10,000 meters in 32:08.26, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to reflect on her third-place finish March 31 and overcoming a sore hamstring in order to finish the race at the Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field in Palo Alto, Calif. Vestri also revisits her sixth-place performance March 10 at the Division 1 indoor 5,000-meter final in Albuquerque, N.M., and how meaningful it was to compete in her first national championship race since placing 10th in the 10,000 in 2021 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. She explains being away from the sport for 13 months after suffering a stress reaction following her victory in November 2021 at the NCAA Division 1 Northeast Regional and not being able to compete at the Division 1 cross country final in Tallahassee, Fla., as a result. Vestri reminisces about returning to competition in December in the indoor 5,000 at the Sharon Colyear Danville Season Opener and clocking a personal-best 15:42.48 at Boston University with her father Steve in attendance. She also explains how significant it has been in recent months to travel to meets with her teammates and to reconnect with the running community. Vestri expresses gratitude for Syracuse coach Brien Bell and his unwavering support during her rehabilitation and recovery, as well as his plan in order to help her return to competition, with the primary goal to prepare for the Division 1 outdoor final in June in Austin, Texas. She also revisits competing in the 10,000 at the NCAA final in 2019 at Mike A. Myers Stadium when Vestri was representing Iowa State, and the challenges of racing at the East Regional final in Jacksonville, Fla., as well as the NCAA championship in Austin. Vestri, who is scheduled to race again April 27 at Penn Relays in Philadelphia, also examines how instrumental her faith has been in helping her remain resilient, patient and persevering despite her injury setbacks and how impactful the advice of her parents, coaches, teammates and former Syracuse star and 10,000 program record holder Paige Stoner (32:07.36) has been for her in returning the sport and continuing to pursue her aspirations and dreams of running as a professional athlete following her collegiate career.
